Years 1–3 Writing Programs That Build Real Skills

Step by Step: From Sentences to Stories to Strong Opinions

Does your child have plenty of ideas — but freeze the moment they pick up a pencil?

You’re not alone. Writing is one of the most complex things we ask children to do. It requires thinking, organising, remembering, and getting it all onto the page at once — no wonder so many children don’t know where to start.

Our structured e-writing programs break that process right down. Step by step, children move from thinking through to speaking, and finally to writing — building confidence and clarity at every stage.

What the Programs Cover

Our Years 1–3 writing series supports children across three key areas:

Sentence Structure — The Foundation of All Writing

Before children can write stories or essays, they need to feel confident constructing a clear, complete sentence. This program explicitly teaches children how to form a sentence, organise a simple idea, say it aloud before writing it, and build confidence with structured, supported practice. The result? Less overwhelm, and a clear place to start.

Paragraph and Early Narrative Writing

Once sentence confidence is established, children are guided step by step into paragraph writing and early storytelling. They learn how to write a strong topic sentence, stay focused on one idea, add relevant supporting details, and sequence their thinking logically. From there, they begin planning and writing simple narratives; with a beginning, middle, and end, learning how to build events around a central problem.

Persuasive Writing — Years 1–3

Children learn to express their opinions clearly and back them up with reasons. The program begins with oral language, saying ideas aloud, before moving through simple opinion writing, building multiple reasons, and constructing structured written responses. This builds not just writing skills, but thinking and communication skills that extend well beyond the classroom.

A Structured Approach Grounded in Evidence

All LALI writing programs follow a clear, research-informed progression:

Oral Language → Guided Practice → Independent Writing

This approach reduces cognitive load, builds confidence before independence, and ensures children understand what they want to say before they’re asked to write it. Each program is intentionally scaffolded with repetition and routine — because consistency is how children grow.

Ideal for neurodivergent and developing learners

These programs are especially effective for children who have lots of ideas but struggle to organise them, jump between topics when writing, find the blank page overwhelming, or need clear, predictable structure to feel confident.

By breaking writing into small, manageable steps, children learn how to organise their thinking and discover that they do have something important to say.

Ready to Give Your Child a Real Place to Start?

Writing confidence doesn’t happen overnight — but with the right structure, the right support, and one small step at a time, it does happen.

On the fence?

That’s completely okay. Have a look at the sample book, explore the pricing, and take your time. When you’re ready, we’ll be here.
